The 2018 Sage Canyon Red is blend of 50% Carignan, 25% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre, and 5% Syrah. This versatile Rhone red blend from St. Helena, CA is made with traditional winemaking processes, like 100% stem retention, whole cluster fermentation, oak-aging for one year in small, used barrels, and bottling with neither fining nor filtration. Each vintage has a unique character, and we LOVED this one!
The finished wine is bright and flavorful. The Carignan fruit is stylish, with elements of wild cherry, plum and black fig, while the Grenache and Mourvèdre add exotic aromas of wild herbs and lavender. It’s a classic and can be enjoyed now or aged for 10+ years. Medium body, bold red fruit and earthy-meaty notes are ideal with richer poultry dishes (turkey, duck), roasted pork. The thing to keep in mind with this wine is to expand on its natural spice flavorings of cinnamon, cumin, dried herbs by also adding them to the dish.
