Quick Overview

The 2010 Offering is a wine that captures the imagination and challenges expectations, it displays a beautiful purity and depth that is reminiscent of having a summer picnic in an ancient church. Resinous scents of black cherry cola, frankincense, fresh-peeled Clementine orange and vanilla extract lead to a well structured and balanced palate of curried mix-berry cobbler, tumeric, dark chocolate cocoa nibs and black pepper with rocky, persistent tannins. 48% Grenache from Santa Barbara Highlands, Alta Mesa and Larner, 29% Syrah from Bien Nacido, Watch Hill, Les Galets, Larner and Santa Barbara Highlands, 21% Mourvedre from Alta Mesa, Santa Barbara Highlands and Alta Colina, 2% Viognier from Bien Nacido Vineyard. Decant one to two hours. Drink slightly below room temperature. Aging potential 8-10 years. 64 barrels made *LIMITED*

Details

Curt Schalchlin is probably one of the most talented young winemakers whom I’ve had the opportunity to meet and taste with. His latest “Offering” is his version of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. A blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre and just a touch of Viognier, using about 15% whole clusters, aged in a combination of new, once-used and neutral French oak. The resulting wine is complex and earthy, with a savory, meaty undercurrent from cooler climate Syrah and Mourvedre. There's also bright cherry and raspberry fruit, brambly blackberry and something evocative of a caramel hazelnut mocha spiked with black pepper.
